As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve and influence how decisions are made across sectors, community supervision agencies face both an opportunity and a responsibility: to understand how AI can support their mission, while carefully navigating its risks and ethical implications.
This 90-minute bridge session, hosted by the APPA Technology Committee, serves as a crucial stepping stone between the introductory workshop on AI Embracing the Future: Integrating AI into Practice offered as an intensive session at the Winter 2025 Institute and the upcoming intensive session Artificial Intelligence in Community Supervision: Opportunities, Challenges, and Ethical Applications intensive session at the Summer 2025 Institute. It is designed to spark new thinking and prepare participants to actively engage in planning and implementation efforts.
Participants will explore:
The foundational concepts of AI in clear, accessible terms
Real-world examples of how AI is being used in justice and supervision settings
The balance between efficiency and ethics in applying AI
Core considerations for responsible use including transparency, fairness, and equity
The session will also provide guided prompts and interactive discussion to help attendees begin identifying opportunities and challenges unique to their agencies. Participants will leave with ideas and action items to bring into the more hands-on, advanced workshop, where strategies for implementation, governance, and workforce development will be explored in greater detail.
Join us as we connect today’s exploration with tomorrow’s innovation ensuring AI supports the values at the heart of community supervision: trust, transformation, and justice.
