About
The new statutory guidance for Relationships and Sex Education makes clear that students in secondary education need to be taught about pornography and its harms (and primary teachers are increasingly concerned about younger children’s exposure to online pornography). How can this be done in a way which is most effective and ethical for young people? There are various complexities, dilemmas and pitfalls, and it’s a topic that can generate a lot of anxiety, embarrassment and shame. There is also often a lack of clarity around the fundamental purpose of this education. Against this backdrop, this talk by Dr Elly Hanson suggests some key evidence-based principles for educators to draw upon as they plan and review their approach to this topic.
