Title
Director, Work-Based Learning | North Kansas City Schools
Bio
Shannon C. Shelton, a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, learned the values of hard work and determination at an early age. This led her to earn a full-ride scholarship to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, graduating # 1 in her class.

With over a decade of educational experience, a knack for making meaningful connections with various stakeholders, and an insatiable appetite for empowering students to unleash and maximize their untapped potential, Shannon is on a mission to transform education through college and career readiness structures. Over time, her role evolved from serving as a K- 12 grade level teacher, Educational Advisor, Lead College and Career Coordinator, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Currently, Shannon passionately serves as Assistant Director for Work-Based Learning in the North Kansas City School District. Her primary role is to build district-level systems of support in maintaining business and community pathway partners by using work-based learning experiences to shed light on the invaluable talent that students bring to organizations. She firmly believes that this will positively impact classroom learning, increase community involvement, and provide solutions to the demands of our ever-changing workforce.

Shannon’s career has been a model of service for the next generation as she has led the way for graduating classes earning more than $65 million in scholarships, established an alumni mentorship program, and recently facilitated a mock interview day that provided an opportunity for more than 1,500 sophomores to interview with community business partners. “Students need to know that excellence is a journey and not a simple destination.”

Shannon actively serves on several community boards, some including Life-A-New Preparatory Academy, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Northland Health Care Access, Kansas City Zoo, and the North Kansas City YMCA. Shannon enjoys spending time with her husband, James, of 12 years, and their 7-year-old son, Caleb. Both bring her immeasurable joy. The family enjoys a good game of UNO, “unfinished" DIY projects, traveling, and is known for being a house divided during the football season (Mizzou vs. Arkansas).
