Matt is Professor of International Development at Northumbria University (UK) where he co-directs the Northumbria Centre for International Development. Matt’s research focuses on volunteering, civil society and citizenship in humanitarian and development settings. Before becoming an academic he worked for a development NGO and he continues to work in partnership with a range of development organisations. Matt co-authored the IFRC Global Review on Volunteering, was Research Director of the Volunteers in Conflicts Emergencies Initiative with the Swedish Red Cross, and has published on issues including South-South volunteering, volunteering and citizenship, faith and volunteering and volunteering and gender. Matt is currently Director of Refugee Youth Volunteering Uganda (RYVU), a 27-month research project on volunteering amongst young displaced people in Uganda, Director of ISSRAR, a project exploring youth agency in Palestine, and co-investigator of Living Deltas, a five-year project exploring the lives of delta dwellers in India, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
