Bio
Bernard "Bernie" Flynn has served as CEO of Mercer Street Friends since February 2020. As one of Mercer County’s longest-standing nonprofits, in operation since 1958, Mercer Street Friends provides social services to families in need, is the backbone Community School agency in the City of Trenton, helping to support the education of Trenton School District students, and serves as Mercer County’s Food Bank. Bernie is a full-time volunteer executive who has made a long-term commitment to the organization.
Prior to joining Mercer Street Friends, Bernie served as President and CEO of NJM Insurance Group from 2008 to 2018. He began his career at NJM in 1993 as a staff attorney; Mr. Flynn was named Vice President and General Counsel in 2001 and Senior Vice President and General Counsel in 2004. He was elected to the NJM Board of Directors in 2003 and served on the Board of NJM Bank from 2004 to 2014.
Before he joined NJM, Mr. Flynn was a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General from 1987 to 1993, serving as Counsel for the Commissioner of Insurance from 1991 to 1993.
In October of 2015, Mr. Flynn was named co-chair of Greater Trenton, a non-profit organization whose mission is to advance economic development and revitalization projects of importance to New Jersey’s capital city. He is also a founding Board member of Choose New Jersey, an independent, privately funded, and managed non-profit corporation that markets the Garden State as a premier location for domestic and international businesses looking to expand or relocate their operations. From 2012 to 2014, Mr. Flynn served as Choose New Jersey’s Chairman.
Bernie has also been a Rutgers Business School's Institute for Ethical Leadership Executive Business Cabinet member. He has served as a Trustee for Public Media NJ, Inc. and as a Board Member of the New Jersey Network (NJN) Foundation.
He graduated from Rutgers University School of Law in 1986 after obtaining his B.S. from Fordham University in 1982. In 2001, Mr. Flynn earned the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) Designation.
Mr. Flynn and his wife, Ann, live in Delran, NJ. They have two children.
