Meeting citizens where they R
Bio
We published a CRAN package and leveraged Shiny to tackle an information access problem citizens had with navigating to each individual Hong Kong district councillor’s Facebook page to receive updates on them. This posed an obstacle to civic participation as there was no central source. In this respect, citizens had to go to where the information was.

In this talk, we will outline how we switched this around by getting the information to go to where the citizens are, thereby removing obstacles to civic participation and empowering them with seamless access to this data.

We will cover specific technical elements of building a robust CRAN package and a mobile-centric Shiny app, as well as good DevOps practices that facilitate standardised and easy collaboration. This will be framed alongside softer elements of organically building a bottoms-up Agile team of volunteers with a diverse skillset who share a common passion. We then move onto our plans for scaling-up, including building relationships with district councillors through user-research. Lastly, we will talk about using project management frameworks such as lightning decision jams to brainstorm products to meet these identified user-needs.

Committed to open-source as much as possible, Avision tries to share his code whenever the opportunity arises. This even weirdly extends to his personal life where he shares his gaming experiences on Medium and pictures of his cooking and baking on his Instagram page, @hungerontheculinaryexpress. Shame he does not share the food itself though.
