Richard Emberling, COSS, is a Vietnam-era U.S. Navy veteran with over 47 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and more than 35 years dedicated to safety. Currently, Richard serves as a Principal HSE Specialist at Veriforce, LLC, where he is also a Senior HSE Advisor and Lead Auditor. As part of Veriforce's Professional Services Team, Richard conducts contractor audits for operators and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards. He is certified as an ISO 14001 and ISO 18001 Lead Auditor and plays a critical role in reviewing and maintaining company safety audit policies and procedures.
Richard's career spans extensive roles in the oil and gas sector, including workover rigs, drilling rigs, pipelines, fracking, and cementing operations. His expertise also includes gas processing, production, and serving as a Process Safety Management (PSM) Coordinator for a major oil and gas operator. Beyond his corporate roles, Richard successfully owned and operated a safety consulting business, overseeing operator qualifications, and managing hundreds of contractors during refinery turnarounds for a major oil company.
Richard's dedication to safety extends beyond his professional roles. He spent 10 years as the Training Officer for a fire department, where he honed his skills in safety training and emergency management. A Master Trainer for PEC Safety, Richard has been affiliated with PEC/Veriforce since 1994 and has worked full-time with the organization since 2013.
In addition to his hands-on experience, Richard is a member of the ASSP (American Society of Safety Professionals) and actively contributes to the ANSI/ASSP Z390.1 and Z490.1 committees. His passion for safety is guided by a belief in its critical importance, as illustrated by Sir Brian Appleton's words: “Safety is not an intellectual exercise to keep us in work. It is a matter of life and death. It is the sum of our contributions to safety management that determines whether the people we work with live or die.”
Richard's extensive training and certifications bolster his expertise. These include ISO Lead Auditor certifications, Master Trainer qualifications, safety auditing, regulatory compliance, and specialized instruction in confined space entry, fire service, hazmat response, and incident command. His leadership and commitment to safety have earned him numerous accolades, including Operator of the Year, Meritorious Captain's Mast from the U.S. Navy, and the Mobil Cotton Bowl Award for outstanding contributions.
