It’s normal for children in the middle school age range to start to lose interest in education, something 24-year-old Kelowna resident Emily Averill says she relates to. It can also be difficult to find programs in BC that combine Science and French.
For her YIS innovation, Emily created Emcologique, an ecology-based educational resource for middle school-aged children in English and French Immersion. Her program offers fully online content, including online challenges, videos and in-person workshops, that get middle school children out in nature and learning about their environments.
After participating in the Science Fair Fun Run in 2015, Emily kept up to date with the BC Science Fair Foundation and decided to get involved with YIS. This competition gives her a chance to involve others in her innovation, connect with other youth and potentially grow and expand Emcologique’s programs.
