Mrs Amrit Dhaliwal is a disabled blind speaker who is passionate about raising awareness of disability and encouraging an opening doors approach where the focus becomes going out into the community rather than bringing activities into services. She enjoys sharing her own personal experiences with disability and inclusion, as well as her involvement with the Leonard Cheshire discoverIT programme and accessible technology.
“I hope that the disability awareness work that I do will achieve the following. Firstly, I wish to create more positive attitudes towards disabled people. For the non-disabled community to understand that impairment is only a small part of an individual, it does not shape or define who they are. We’re people just like you, with hopes, dreams and ambitions. It would be fantastic if society would act upon and make positive changes based on the knowledge and insight they gain from disabled people. Finally, I would love for organisations to be more mindful and supportive of people with disabilities in all that they do, this is the only way we will succeed in creating a more inclusive and fairer world for everyone”.
