Bio
Joanne Wiita is the Grants Administration Manager for the State of Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC). Joanne joined the DOC Reentry Unit in September of 2019 to implement the Statewide Adult Recidivism Reduction Implementation Project “Reentry Program” funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance Second Chance Act grant.
Previously Joanne worked as Planning and Grant Administrator for one of 12 statewide regional housing authorities. During her eleven-year tenure working with Alaska tribes she was instrumental in rural community development and facilitating community comprehensive planning resulting in multiple grant projects serving low-income households and homeless populations. Her planning and grant project experience include housing development, energy conservation and development, senior services, community economic development, and financial literacy education.

Joanne’s professional experience encompasses extensive work with Native organizations including culturally relevant program development in her capacity of working with multiple Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANSCA) Corporations and Alaska Tribal Governments for over 20 years.

Joanne is eager to listen, learn, and work with tribal partners in her current role with DOC. DOC’s objective is to receive tribe input and work in partnership with Alaska Native communities and people on the path forward to reduce Alaska recidivism and improve public safety.

Joanne is a Sealaska and Kootznoowoo shareholder and is Kwashkikwaan, a Tlinit clan of the raven moiety. Joanne’s late husband was Anaaxoots of the Sitka Kaagwaantaan Wolf clan. Joanne relocated from Juneau to Anchorage where she has many nieces and nephews. Her leisure time is spent cheering on the many hockey players in her family!
