It’s no secret that 3D printing is exploding in popularity. It’s an innovation open to endless possibilities, and more recently it’s been changing the way we explore the building of medical devices.
Currently, hip braces for conditions like osteoarthritis cost over $1600. For her YIS innovation, 15-year-old Victoria BC resident Shreya Sivakumar designed a cheaper, more innovative alternative; a 3D-printed bracing device that encloses around the upper portion of the leg to help those undergoing hip pain.
Her brace reduces tension at the hip point through an applied torque. In addition to being more cost-effective, the 3D printing aspect allows for patient customization and makes it accessible to many developing countries.
Shreya entered YIS to challenge herself and see her fellow students’ amazing innovations. She is eager to share her findings on how 3D printing can revolutionize healthcare.
