Name
Norbert Banyi
Title
2020 YIS Finalist
Bio
After watching bronchoscopy procedures, 19-year-old UBC student Norbert Banyi saw that nurses would perform a jaw-thrust maneuver throughout the procedure. He realized there was a greater need for mechanical jaw-thrust devices which could optimize those procedures, freeing up medical hands to redistribute resources.

For his YIS submission, 19-year-old UBC student Norbert Banyi designed a non-invasive mechanical device that performs the jaw-thrust maneuver on patients, to open the airways of sedated patients during endotracheal procedures. His design, easily assembled with 3D-printable parts, offers more freedom for adjusting a patient’s head position, while maintaining a strong hold on the jaw.

Norbert chose to enter the competition because he is confident his innovation can potentially reduce hospital costs and improve quality of care. He believes YIS is a great avenue to share this innovation with industry leaders, at a time where hospital resource redistribution can make a tremendous impact, particularly during COVID-19.
