Prof. Georgina Gethin works in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, National University of Ireland, Galway which is among the top 100 Schools of Nursing in the World QS Rankings 2017 & 2018. She holds a PhD and fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has an extensive background in wound management as a clinical nurse specialist, clinical consultancy, member of the diabetic foot research team in NUI Galway. She lectures at undergraduate and post-graduate level on wound healing and tissue repair and established the MSc/PG Dip Wound Healing and Tissue Repair in NUI Galway. Georgina is supervisor and examiner for MSc and PhD research programmes.
Georgina is the Editor of the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) Journal and has been involved in many EWMA projects including Home Care Wound Care, patient panel, Leg Ulcer Guidelines project and Lifestyle factors and wound healing. Her specialist areas of interest are in epidemiology of wounds, core outcome sets, wound bed assessment incorporating wound pH and temperature and palliative wound care. She is a member of the editorial board of 3 peer-reviewed journals, and has published and presented internationally on wound management. She is currently PI on many research projects with grant income of over €4m. In 2017 she Co-founded the Alliance for Research and Innovation in Wounds, a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency group dedicated to the advancement of wound care and improving patient outcomes.
Prof. Gethin also has integral clinical involvement in the SFI Research Centre for Medical Devices (CÚRAM) partnership with Fleming Medical in the investigation of how advanced material printing techniques can be used to produce thin, flexible sensors which can be integrated into a wound dressing. Fleming Medical are delighted to work with Prof. Gethin and the team to research bringing an innovative Smart Wound Dressing to the market in the future.
