“We don’t educate by fear, but by empowering adults and children to use technology appropriately, and to identify and mitigate risks which may lead to harm.”
Online Safety has been a passion of mine for a very long time; I love technology and the huge benefits that can be realised through global connectivity and collaboration. I’m a strong believer that online safety is an enabler, not a showstopper; it should not be a barrier to innovative use of technology. I’m a heavy user of social media, have been a gamer since my early 20’s and I love YouTube; I use all the things children and young people use; I understand their online spaces.
I became a CEOP Ambassador in 2008, which was a great starting point, but the world is changing rapidly, technology is diversifying at an extraordinary rate and almost all behaviours are now enacted online. Whilst online safety is predominantly about safeguarding, the wider aspects of behaviour and wellbeing are really starting to come to the fore which take into account more emotional, behavioural and usage aspects of technology.
I work with schools nationally and internationally speaking with children and young people, their parents and staff to understand their concerns and provide support and guidance.
