Jim has specialised in environmental consultancy, hazardous materials management, and ship and offshore recycling projects since 2007. He is currently working on his 30th ship recycling facility compliance and certification project, having provided consultancy support and project management for the certification of facilities in Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East, against IMO Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation requirements. This includes all operational aspects relating to health, safety and the environment, with additional focus on the downstream handling of waste against national and international standards.
Jim currently co-manages BVS’s technical approach to ship and offshore recycling from build, operation, to end of life recycling. A key responsibility is providing training and technical support to the BVS global team of more than 80 Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) Expert surveyors. He contributed to the IMO Guidelines for the IHM between 2013 and 2015.
In addition to providing bespoke ship and offshore recycling consultancy services for shipowners, recycling facilities, and industry stakeholders, Jim has almost 20 years of experience in developing technical and survey procedures, predominantly aligned with environmental legislation. He has delivered advanced IHM, ship recycling, and environmental consultancy, training courses, and workshops across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. In April 2024 he worked with the IMO as an international ship recycling expert as part of the SENSREC Phase III mission in Bangladesh and acted as independent expert supporting the IMO SENSREC project in Pakistan (May 2025).
From 2014 – 2018 he was a member of the SSI (Sustainable Shipping Initiative) Labour Standards in Shipbreaking and the Closed Loop Materials Management work streams and was the IACS (International Association of Classification Societies) representative for Ship Recycling to the IMO and the European Union for a period of 4 years.
