Helmut Gnaegi is a cofounder of Diatome in 1970. He developed the machines and apparatus for manufacturing diamond knives for ultramicrotomy. During the years he developed knives for ultrathin sections, cryo knives for biological and polymer sectioning, oscillating diamond knives, antistatic devices, double manipulators and other accessories for ultramicrotomy.
Helmut Gnaegi started teaching ultramicrotomy in the late 1970s. He teaches worldwide, both in materials research ultramicrotomy and biology.
In 1980 Helmut Gnaegi was an invited speaker for the Foundation of the new Chinese Society of Electron Microscopy.
From 1990-2010 Helmut Gnaegi collaborated with Prof. J. Dubochet (got Nobelprice in 2017 for his contribution to cryo EM). Important developments (knives, antistatic devices, manupulators, etc, resulted from this collaboration.
2016 Helmut Gnaegi was elected as a fellow member of the US Society for Microscopy.
