Andy Shen is currently a freshman attending San Luis Obispo High School and studies piano with Mr. Alan Boehmer in Los Osos, CA. A bilingual speaker of English and Mandarin Chinese, he is legally blind and reads Braille. He is 14 years old and started to learn piano when he was five. He is fond of Classical music. Bach, Liszt, Chopin, and Beethoven are his favorite composers. Additionally, he likes to compose his own music.
In 2020, Andy won the first place award in Category C and the grand prize at the CAPMT Contemporary Music Competition State Finals. He has previously won first and second place awards in the district-wide CAPMT Honors competitions. In addition, he won the legacy and second place awards at the Paderewski Youth Piano Competition in Paso Robles.
Biology and math are his favorite subjects in school. In his spare time, Andy also enjoys singing, traveling, reading, swimming, and learning foreign languages including Spanish and French in addition to playing the piano.
