Teagasc Crop Research
Bio
Dr John Finnan from Teagasc presented research into growing Hemp that Teagasc has undertaken over the past ten years. This research confirmed that Hemp had great potential as a source of fibre for paper and textiles, fibreboard and as an energy crop which could be included in a tillage rotation with high yields for low inputs. Hemp´s benefits included that it suppresses weeds, returns nutrients to the soil and encourages rhizomes growth which improves soil structure. The bioremediation of the soil properties are particularly impressive with Hemp. Teagasc Hemp crops were grown in success without the use of herbicides, fungicides or insecticides and experienced no problem with insects or pests. John also discussed the unique machinery and challenges for harvesting , mowing, racking and bailing.
