Bio
John Welch worked as a Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse, Senior Nurse, Lecturer, and Consultant Nurse in Critical Care and Critical Care Outreach in seven London hospitals and at King’s College London. He set-up one of the first Critical Care Outreach services in the UK, was first Chair of the UK National Outreach Forum, first Programme Lead for Critical Care Outreach at the Department of Health Modernisation Agency, and was part of the College of Physicians group that developed and propagated the National Early Warning Score.

John is the UCLH clinical lead and a contributor to the 2021 national guidance on sepsis, and now sit on NHS England / NHS Improvement working groups leading the creation of new Enhanced Care Areas, on developing Clinician, Patient & Family Worry and Concern as methods to improve recognition of deterioration, and the national Managing Deterioration Advisory Group.

John is particularly interested in patient / carer escalation to aid recognition of acute illness, in better understanding of the context of deterioration (e.g., ward staffing) and the use of technology such as wireless wearable sensors; as well as in education – he is a co-author of the new iSRRS sponsored ‘Essentials of RRS’ training course.

This last year, John co-led set-up and then worked clinically on a brand-new High Dependency Respiratory Unit created for the CoViD pandemic (1st wave), and as part of the senior team in the expanded ICU (2nd wave).
