Detective Sergeant Paul Apthorpe is a Team Leader of the Specialist Investigations Team at the Cybercrime Squad, New South Wales Police Force. His team handles complex cyber-dependent crime such as hacks, sextortion and SIM-boxes, and also manages the cryptocurrency capability for the NSW Police, including tracing, seizure and storage. Paul recently wrote and implemented the NSWPF’s standard operating procedures for cryptocurrency seizure and storage, and is in the process of rolling out training to thousands of frontline NSW Police on basic cryptocurrency knowledge and tracing.
Paul has been in the NSW Police Force for 20 years, and has worked at Kings Cross Command, Robbery and Serious Crime, and Homicide. He’s led National initiatives with Australian LEAs to combat cryptocurrency crime and regularly presents on cybercrime and cryptocurrency to police, government and community groups. Paul is passionate about enabling Law Enforcement to combat cyber and cryptocurrency related crime.
