An ICT & business leader for 30 years, Louis Onyango OTIENO has accrued a unique set of experiences from the public & private sectors in the US & Africa. These drive Louis' passion for ICT in Development. He regularly travels rural Africa seeking inspiration for the application of ICTs to positively impact Africa's people & future. Otieno firmly believes that African innovation transforms the world.
A software developer by training & a MBA graduate, Otieno began his professional career in the US, rising to AVP at EEC Financial Services in New York & New Jersey. He was responsible for IT systems integration as the firm expanded through mergers & acquisitions.
In 1997, Otieno returned to Africa to lead Microsoft's expansion across West, East, Central Africa & the Indian Ocean Islands. Based in Nairobi & Johannesburg, Louis held various senior roles including Director for the Marketing, Business Operations and the Enterprise Sales groups, as well as the GM for East & Southern Africa. In these roles Otieno drove the company's fastest business growth globally. Otieno was also a founder Director of Microsoft 4Afrika – a strategic initiative aimed at helping Africa accelerate its economic growth & global competitiveness. Here, Otieno led the company’s partnerships with African governments & regional bodies in developing innovation-enabling policies.
Otieno mentors many young professionals, some of whom now lead ICT multinationals across Africa.
Otieno is a past President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Kenya. He has served as ICT advisor to the Presidents of Tanzania, Uganda & Mozambique. He served on the boards of Kenya’s Vision 2030 Board, Enablis (E. Africa), Red Media (Nigeria) & the COMESA Business Council. He sits on the boards of Nation Media Group PLC & Absa Bank of Kenya PLC providing guidance on Digital Transformation. He is the Chairman of the Board of Absa Asset Management (K) Ltd.
