Over 2 million deaths occur each year due to wounds resulting in hemorrhaging or blood loss. For his invention, 13-year-old Keanu Chan developed a novel device called HEALIT, or Hemostasis by Expanding Automatic Lifesaving Innovative Technique.
The device aims to significantly reduce the amount and rate of bleeding in traumatic wounds, and when used on a simulator, it accomplished just that. Chan designed a prototype that is easy to use, inexpensive and more practical than current alternatives.
Chan knew he wanted to join a network of experts and science enthusiasts who could help further his project. He is excited for the challenge to pitch his innovation and receive feedback.
