Currently, there is a lack of affordable, accessible and quantitative diagnostic tools for neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. After his grandmother was misdiagnosed with depression prior to being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, 18-year-old Vancouver resident Kai Long was inspired to create an effective solution that would help the community.
Inspired by his grandmother, he developed a smartphone-based walking analysis system, aimed at transforming smartphones into powerful screening tools for neurodegenerative diseases. The algorithm of the system works to analyze changes in walking patterns, which could indicate a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s, allowing for active monitoring for anyone with access to a smartphone.
In addition to being inspired by his grandmother, Kai joined the competition because of his passion for innovation and his determination to create positive change in the global community. Through YIS, he hopes to develop skills in entrepreneurship and the business side of science.
