Bio
Dr. Geert Olyslaegers is scientific collaborator in the Unit Crisis Management and Decision support (CMD) at the Belgian nuclear research Centre SCK CEN. CMD performs research in emergency planning but provides also services to many clients, among which the Belgian National Crisis Centre, Belgian nuclear safety and waste authorities and the European Union.
He has more than 20 years of experience in modelling of radionuclide distribution and transport in the environment and radiological impact assessments in different biosphere compartments (land, water, air). He is specialized in radiological impact analysis and works in several multidisciplinary areas in which he develops and improves methods and directives for the evaluation of cleaning operations for radioactive contaminated sites and the evaluation of routine and accidental releases of nuclear or industrial installations (e.g. RECUMO, MINVERA, NURA,…) . This knowledge has also been proven to be very useful in his current work in developing radiation emergency preparedness plans and giving support in the implementation of national radiological response plans. During his employment at CMD (now more than 10 years) he gained experience in the use of many radiological emergency dispersion models such al Model Kempen, Hotspot, ALOHA and JRodos and also developed his own dispersion models such as Rules of Thumb and Aeolus.
Furthermore he was involved in several national and international projects and training courses which mainly focused on (CBRN) emergency management. He was involved in different international projects on emergency management (EC funded PREPARE, CoE projects P09, P16, P33, P42, P44 and P60). Within the framework of the Belgian nuclear emergency plan he is radiological expert for the Belgian federal government.
Geert Olyslaegers holds a PhD in Science from the University of Antwerp. As a voluntary emergency medical technician he has direct insight in the operational aspects of first-responders. With Dutch being his mother tongue, he can also express himself orally and in writing fluently in English. He has good knowledge of French and has some knowledge of German.
Since 2018, he is also a certified class 1 UAV pilot (now A2 - Remote pilot certificate of competency) for SCK CEN and for the federal measurement teams. In this capacity he is/was involved in several national and international drone projects (NATO TEARS, EC Preparedness, BUDDAWAK, …) and performed different UAV radiological surveillance studies, which involved the characterization of radioactive plumes, surveillance of (potentially) contaminated sites and the search for radioactive sources.
