Deputy Director, Belgian Passenger Information Unit (BelPIU)
Bio
Daan joined the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2016 as a project manager for the transposition and implementation of the EU PNR Directive in Belgium. While focusing first on the legal and technical aspects of the national API/PNR programme, he became Deputy Director of the newly established Belgian Passenger Information Unit (BelPIU) in 2019. As Deputy Director Strategy and International, Daan and his team cover organizational development, legal and international affairs, carrier relations, information security, strategic support to the operational services as well as the management of various projects. Currently one of the major projects include the establishment of the national ETIAS Unit (equivalent to US ESTA) in Belgium.
Daan’s particular interest for European and international affairs led to numerous missions across Europe, the United States and Canada. Apart from being chair of the Informal Working Group PNR he was also a member of the evaluation committee for the EU - USA PNR Agreement and played an active role in the negotiations on the new ICAO (UN) PNR standards.
Prior to joining the Ministry of Home Affairs, Daan gained a Master of Science in Political Science from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and an Advanced Master’s degree in European Public Administration from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He started his career with a traineeship in the European Parliament.
