Dr. Jessica Tom, Scientific Editor, currently handles transferred manuscripts from initial assessment, inviting reviewers, and making final decisions at several journals including Surfaces and Interfaces, and Results in Surfaces and Interfaces. She received her Ph.D. in 2014 at the University of Sydney in the application of controlled radical polymerisation techniques to modify and improve the properties of materials such as cellulose and silica nanoparticles. Her post-doctoral research at Technische Universität Darmstadt and Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena involved tuning the ionic permselectivity of mesoporous materials for lab-on-chip devices, and preparing block copolymer micelles containing photoacids or photobases for photo-triggered local drug release. After deciding to leave the lab, Jessica joined Elsevier in 2021 in the Berlin office. Her role has changed during this time, but the focus has always remained helping authors reach publication by providing guidance, opportunities to revise, and facilitating transfers to more suitable homes.
