David B. Brownlee is a historian of modern architecture and urbanism who has taught for his entire career at the University of Pennsylvania. Winner of major publication awards from the Society of Architectural Historians (USA), its British counterpart, and the American Institute of Architects, he was named a Fellow of the SAH in 2015. In 2020 the Society of Architectural Historians established the Brownlee Dissertation Prize in his honor. At Penn, Brownlee directed the implementation of the College House system in 1998 and won the Lindback Award for teaching in 2001. He served for 15 years on the Philadelphia Historical Commission, chairing its designation committee, and he now serves on the boards of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and the Design Advocacy Group.
