Jie Sun, PhD

Jie Sun is the Harrison Professor of Medicine and associate director of the Carter Immunology Center (CIC) at the University of Virginia (UVA). He obtained his BS and MS in China, followed by his PhD in cell and molecular biology at the University of Pennsylvania and a postdoctoral fellowship in viral immunology at UVA. Sun established his own research group at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2011, moved to the Mayo Clinic in 2016, and joined UVA’s CIC and infectious disease division in January 2022. Sun studies mechanisms of acute and chronic pathogenesis for respiratory viruses including influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. His lab also investigates mucosal immunity following systemic or respiratory vaccination.
