Masumi Hamahira is Ambasssador to Malaysia and Technical Standards Committee Member at Bitcoin Association, a global industry organization that advances Bitcoin Satoshi Vision(SV). The Association supports Bitcoin SV because it is the only project adhering to Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto’s original protocol, design and vision for Bitcoin to become a peer-to-peer electronic cash system and global data ledger for enterprise.The Bitcoin Association brings together merchants, application developers, service providers, enterprises, miners and others in the Bitcoin SV ecosystem to advance the growth of Bitcoin commerce.
Masumi Hamahira has 22 years working experience in the banking and finance industry at MUFG Bank and was appointed for Islamic Finance Department of MUFG Bank (Malaysia) in 2011. He is currently Executive Advisor for Islamic Finance Department of MUFG Bank (Malaysia).
Before coming to Malaysia, Masumi was attached to several key divisions in Tokyo Head office of MUFG Bank. He was responsible for corporate finance, derivatives marketing and structuring as well as global business planning.
Leveraging Masumi’s experience, MUFG Bank (Malaysia) won Islamic Finance News Awards such as The Best Indonesia Deal of the Year 2019, The Most Innovative Deal of the Year 2016, Cross-Border Deal of the Year 2014, Wakalah Deal of the Year 2013, and Structured Finance Deal of the Year 2012. Subsequently, he initiated the world’s first Japanese Yen Sukuk issuance by MUFG Bank (Malaysia) in 2014.
Masumi organized discussion with regulators, legal firms and tax advisors in Japan & Malaysia to clarify tax treatment of Sukuk investment for institutional investors in Japan. He successfully introduced the solution for clarification of tax treatment in Sukuk investment for Japanese institutional investors in 2019. He is enthusiastic for inviting Japanese institutional investors to Sukuk market.
Masumi graduated from Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP, Master equivalent) course at INCEIF. He is currently a Ph.D candidate at IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance, International Islamic University Malaysia. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Economics from Keio University, Japan.
Masumi is a Chartered Professional in Islamic Finance (CPIF) and has been appointed as a Grand Council for Chartered Institute of Islamic Finance Professionals (CIIF) in 2017. Subsequently Masumi was elected and appointed as Honorary Treasurer Grand Council of the CIIF in 2019.
Masumi received Global Top50 Leadership Award in the Islamic Economy from World Islamic Economic Forum. He aspires to contribute more significantly to the development of Islamic FinTech, Islamic Project Finance, Sukuk and Islamic Derivatives by sharing of industry knowledge with the public. Masumi is one of the distinguished panellists in Islamic FinTech Conference to discuss especially application of Blockchain to Islamic Finance. He was invited as a speaker in CoinGeek London, BLOCK TALK SUMMIT (New York), BLOCK PLUS SUMMIT Future of FinTech, Islamic Fintech Dialogue, Global Islamic FinTech Summit, BLOCKCHAIN APPLICATIONS IN CAPITAL MARKETS and REFINITIV(formerly known as Thomson Reuters) Fintech Digital Innovation and the Future of Islamic Finance Work Shop etc.
