Maxine Burns is a Lead Speech and Language Advisor for I CAN, the children’s communication charity.
A specialist speech and language therapist by background, Maxine has many years’ experience of working at both practitioner and leadership levels with primary and secondary aged pupils in mainstream, alternative education and specialist settings in three of the UK countries.
Current strands of work include piloting a Year 7 targeted intervention and, through the DfE funded EYSEND Partnership project, developing more robust and effective pathways for identifying and supporting young children with speech, language and communication needs. Maxine has also worked closely with Ruth Miskin Training in developing the early language focus of the English Hubs Programme.
Particularly interested in older children and young people, she authored I CAN’s discussion paper, Skills for Work, Skills for Life. She led the pilot and launch of both I CAN’s secondary programmes, Secondary Talk and later, Talk about Talk Secondary.
