Men’s sexual health is seldom seen at the forefront of healthcare, and especially innovation. It was this awareness that inspired Nico Werschler to enter the BC Youth Innovation Showcase.
Peyronie's disease affects nearly 13% of the male population and presents as fibrous scar tissue on the penis, causing painful curvature and impaired penile functions. For treatment, injection of medication, often costing $1,400 CAD each, is preferred over surgical removal. But a lack of real-time plaque visibility, immobilization, and needle-guidance hinder injection efficacy, physician confidence, and overall patient outcome.
To address these problems, Nico developed a novel localized penile traction device with ultrasound-based needle guidance, to increase plaque accessibility and visibility during injections.
Having first-hand clinical exposure to treatment cases, and conducting exhaustive background research, Nico is eager to enter the showcase and increase the visibility of this issue. He is also excited to move this project forward to clinical application with the help of contacts and resources provided by YIS.
