Bernie Hickman is CEO of Legal & General Insurance (LGI), a division that
has over 7 million customers in the UK and US, providing life insurance,
critical illness cover and income protection to individuals and company
employees. LGI also has two market-leading businesses in the UK mortgage
market: L&G Mortgage Club that each year facilitates £70billion of
intermediated mortgage lending and L&G Surveying Services arranging more
than 500,000 valuations and surveys every year.
A Fintech business team makes strategic investments in Fintech companies
including theidol.com – a leading provider of comparison services and
SalaryFinance a financial wellbeing employee platform.
LGI Fintech has also invested in Smartr365, a B2B mortgage intermediary
platform creating a frictionless mortgage journey and is working with the LGI
mortgage businesses to transform and deliver growth through technology
innovation.

Bernie joined Legal & General in 1998 from Commercial Union (now Aviva).
Between 2005 and 2010 he was Managing Director, Retail Protection during
which time he launched the UK Protection digital platform, OLP Connect, that
provides market-leading self-service functionality and high levels of straight
through processing; UK retail protection, through organic growth, now has a
market share of 24%. He became MD of Individual Retirement in 2014 and
the CEO co-founder of Legal & General Home Finance in 2015 when he led
the L&G entry into the Lifetime mortgage market, achieving a 25% market
share within 18 months of launching. He has also held the positions of Group
Financial Controller, Investor Relations Director and Solvency II Managing
Director.
