Joel E Smith, EA, MSA has been involved in accounting for nearly 40 years. For 23 years he was a co-owner/operator of a multi-million-dollar business and took care of the company. books and tax filings. From 2010 through 2022 he worked for accounting and tax preparation firms, focusing primarily on nonprofits. Among his duties were 990 preparation and review, bookkeeping, and audit field work and risk assessment.
Joel Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Strayer University and a Master of Science in Accounting from Liberty University. He worked for three different firms before founding Artisan Tax Services, LLC, specializing in non-profits. He also presented before the Prince William County Chamber Nonprofit Alliance. In 2022 he published his book, The Nonprofit Role.
In addition to his familiarity with the accounting aspects of nonprofits, Joel has been very active with nonprofit organizations. The Winchester Optimist Club (defunct), Society of St. Andrew, Shenandoah Valley Hockey League (defunct), and NW Works are all organizations he spent time with as a volunteer at various levels. However, it’s his 20 years as an adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America of which he is the proudest. All three of his sons were Boy Scouts, with two having attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He is also currently involved in setting up, as an officer and Director, a new nonprofit in the area.
