Dr. Jonathan Rutz is an atmospheric scientist and project manager at UC San Diego's Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). As project manager for the Advanced Quantitative Precipitation Information (AQPI) project at CW3E, he is responsible for overall project management, scientific leadership, and stakeholder outreach. Dr. Rutz has extensive expertise in the weather and climate of the Western United States with a focus on atmospheric rivers (ARs), large-scale precipitation events over complex topography, and the physical mechanisms linking these phenomena. Prior to joining CW3E in December 2022, he spent 12 years (including an internship) leading research, development, and scientific training with the National Weather Service at the Western Region Science and Technology Division. Jonathan earned a bachelor’s degree in science and engineering from the University of Michigan in 2009, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from the University of Utah in 2011 and 2014, respectively.
