There’s a science to effective communication. The good news is that it doesn’t involve rockets. Even better, everyone already has the most critical success factor for doing it well—we’re human. The bad news is that—especially in times of crisis—most people stop thinking like humans. Often, they string together a bunch of words that sound impressive but say very little. As HR leaders, you’re in a terrific position to influence what people hear and how they act when they hear it.

In this session, we’ll talk about a few simple but essential concepts that can help you reduce the noise and deliver real human communication:

Be true to your culture
Manage messengers and messages
Choose familiarity over frequency
Build credibility by listening

Director Colleague Communication

Michael Marotta has been a storyteller for as long as he could form words. From being the sports editor and (unconfirmed) gossip columnist in his high school newspaper, to ghost writing for company executives, to penning a pair of novels, he’s built his craft on giving words to human experiences. He’s been a solo artist and led communication teams in financial services, technology, and healthcare organizations. But mostly, he’s a lifelong learner and listener. He currently enjoys the privilege of learning from 2,200 colleagues as head of colleague communication at naviHealth, a Brentwood-based company that improves the healthcare experience for seniors to live more fulfilling lives. Outside the office, he spends his time chasing his golf ball where it shouldn’t fly, sharing stories with friends and family, and working on his third book.
