Tom Bertenshaw
Principal NDT Research Engineer
Tom Bertenshaw, has been working for GKN Aerospace for 16 years, in the industrial development of NDT technologies. His interaction has been with the academic & industrial community, equipment providers and sub-contractors to determine the suitability of the latest technologies to GKN Aerospace, with the view to further develop promising NDT technologies to ultimately deploy them at production sites. This has been for large scale composite components as well as Additively Manufactured parts using Laser Metal Deposition by wire (LMDw).
Tom has two main areas of interest. Firstly, the development of NDT in the Ultrasonic method, which includes inspection of composites using Pulse Echo Phased Array and also Ultrasonic FMC/TFM for Additively Manufactured (AM) parts. Tom has spent time at one of GKN’s production sites to gain the necessary experience to give him a UT L2 qualification. He is now a UT L3 at the GKN Global Technology Centre and is slowly building a team to help with general inspection activities. Within this, he is currently aiming to achieve a TRL6 maturity for the FMC/TFM inspection of AM parts in 2027. This scope includes technique development as well as industrial deployment on in-house robotic developed systems.
Tom’s other area of interest lies in Technique qualification, where he has chaired the BINDT Technique validation user group. He is currently part of the CEN TC138/WG9 committee on “Methodology for Qualification of NDT”, which is currently formed for the development standards in this topic.
Tom has been assisting the BINDT with their strategic objectives on and off since 2018 over the last few years as chair of the BINDT Aerospace committee, and BINDT West of England branch. He has been coordinating Aerospace events with the BINDT for many years and also run various workshops in the past on Technique validation and standards (2022), Additive Manufacture (2018 & 2024), and Simulation of NDT (2026), and complied reports on two of these workshops.
Tom is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the BINDT.

Nathan Elledge
NDT Engineer and Responsible Level 3, Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation
Nathan is in his 20th year of NDT. In his pursuit of excellence, he has served a wide range of industries including Aerospace, Oil and Gas, Construction, Power Generation, and others. He has gained knowledge and experience while continuing to grow skills and talents to make the world a better place. Nathan finds great satisfaction in applying a generalist approach to specialized problems. Among his development achievements are ASNT Level III certifications in ET, MT, PT, RT, UT, and VT; a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from University of Texas at San Antonio; a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from University of Florida; and an endless catalog of lessons learned.

Nathan Hartley
Section Manager – NDT Research & Technology
Nathan Hartley is Manager of TWI’s NDT Research & Technology Section, leading the development of advanced inspection technologies for aerospace and other safety-critical industries. Since joining TWI in 2018, he has delivered research and industrial projects spanning advanced ultrasonics, electromagnetic inspection, robotics, digital NDT and inspection software. His expertise centres on the automated inspection of composite and additive manufactured components, including robotic integration and the development of novel inspection techniques. Nathan’s current focus is the digital transformation of aerospace NDT through technologies such as Eddy Current Array, autonomous robotics and AI-enabled inspection data analytics.

Steven Crummack
NDT Services Manager Level 3 Responsible UT & ET
Steven Crummack is the Leader of Inspection Services at Testia Canada, bringing over four decades of global aerospace expertise. An industry veteran with deep roots across both commercial and defense sectors, Steven holds Level 3 certifications in UT, ET, and Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). His comprehensive background spans from early aerospace manufacturing and Airbus engineering to international leadership in NDT training and services. With a robust foundational history in RT, MT, and PT methodologies, he specializes in ensuring structural integrity, quality control, and the deployment of advanced inspection solutions.
