The St. Joseph Medical Center Stockton's Emergency Medicine program is a 3-yr residency (PGY 1-3) and began with 9 residents per year in its inaugural class in 2018. The residency program is dedicated to training highly skilled, compassionate, and well-rounded physicians who will graduate prepared to care for any individual in a diverse range of emergent, urgent and ambulatory settings. We care for a culturally and socio-economically diverse population in a high volume, high acuity department that serves over 90 thousand patients in our community per year. Excellent, patient-focused care is the mission of our hospital and our residency program.

During training, residents will be expected to gain expertise in evidence –based clinical medical practice and emergency care of a diverse range of adult and pediatric patients presenting with both traumatic injuries and medical conditions. They will also gain knowledge of the research and administrative aspects of medicine. Their clinical experience will be augmented by a rigorous didactic curriculum supported by a newly renovated on campus medical library and a very close affiliation with Touro University California/College of Osteopathic Medicine. The didactic curriculum follows and covers entirely the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine Core Content over an 18 month period, and repeats once during the 3 year residency training. Additional lectures, didactics, and SIM training, as well as electronic materials are added into this core content.

Clinical training is closely supervised by highly trained and board-certified faculty, many also sub-specialty trained, and residents will be given advancing, graded responsibility as they progress through their training. Residents will focus on honing their own teaching, supervisory, and leadership skills as they advance through training.

Residents have the opportunity to rotate at Valley Children’s Health Care and Hospital for both pediatric emergency medicine experience as well as pediatric intensive care unit experience. This is one of the busiest pediatric medical and trauma hospitals in California’s Central Valley.

Faculty for the residency are a diverse group with extensive clinical and academic experience. On staff we have fellowship trained EMS, Ultrasound, SIM and Medical Toxicology physicians. Also on staff are doctors focused on research, quality, and medical informatics.

Lastly, throughout training, our residents will be in a supportive environment where they can attain an exceptional education and begin on their path to lifelong learning and achievement.
