Koen Willems

Koen Willems holds the position of VP EU Programs and Government Relations at ST Engineering iDirect Europe, a market leader in satellite communication technologies. Koen provides his expertise in EU government programs through the Belgian legal entity (proxy) organisation ST Engineering iDirect (Europe) CY NV leveraging the EU footprint and installed base in ground segment satellite networks (www.idirect.net/st-engineering-idirect-europe). On top of his EU activities, Koen defines and develops ST Engineering iDirect’s global strategy for the government and defense market.

Koen Willems has more than 25 years’ experience working in the technology industry. Before joining ST Engineering iDirect in 2008 he was Product Marketing Manager for Europe at the electronics giant TOSHIBA.

Koen has a master's degree in English and Scandinavian Languages from Ghent University and a master's degree in Marketing Strategy and Management from Vlekho Business School.

His expertise in the government and defense satellite market has grown through the involvement in different large (EU) programs as well as frequent interactions with the end-user community and a range of topic-related degrees such as the ‘High Studies in Security and Defence’ degree at the Belgian Royal Higher Institute for Defence, the ‘European Session for Armament Officials’ degree at the French National Institute of Higher Defense and the ‘European Advanced Strategy Course on Security and Defense’ degree at the Egmont Institute, IHEDN and BAKS.

You may know Koen as a GovDef satcom technology evangelist through his regular appearance in editorials in satellite focused publications, white papers and speaking slots at conferences around the world.

Dave Davis
Technical Director, Global Government, ST Engineering iDirect
Dave Davis is a Chartered Engineer with a seasoned background in Satellite Communications (Satcom). Learning his trade as an apprentice in the British Army in 1988, he went on to specialize in Satcom at an early age; his first practical experience of Satcom being the response to Hurricane Andrew in the Caribbean in 1992. Months later he was in the first wave of troops deployed to Bosnia as a satellite terminal technician and continued to work with satellite terminals until his final tour as the military Satcom instructor. He was awarded the MBE in 2002 for meritorious military service.

Leaving the Army in 2003, he went into industry and continued to build his professional qualifications. He joined NSSLGlobal, a leading Satcom distribution partner, as a Systems Engineer, before becoming a Project Manager and Engineering Manager. He led many cutting-edge projects and was responsible for providing communications to many high-profile expeditions, events and deployments. In 2013, he joined ST Engineering iDirect as the European defence and security specialist, before moving to be the lead engineer supporting the ground-breaking Inmarsat Global Xpress (GX) network. He is now providing technical leadership on global government and defence activities at ST Engineering iDirect.

Dave sits on various national and international panels as a technical advisor and is a non-exec Director on the board of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (ITP).

In his spare time, Dave volunteers with the IET and ITP as a Mentor and Professional Recognition Advisor and Assessor. He also volunteers with the Newman Holiday Trust (www.newmantrust.org) and RE:ACT Disaster Response (www.re-act.org.uk), both organisations are always looking for new volunteers.

Steve Slater
Managing Director, GRC Ltd.
Steve Slater is the Managing Director of GRC having assumed the appointment in April 2019. Previous to this, he was the GRC Operations Director.

Steve joined the Army (R SIGNALS) in September 1979 and during his 28-year career as soldier and officer, he was fortunate enough to deploy to and work in most regions of the world. The majority of his service career was planning for, deploying with and managing technical communication systems, predominantly RF and Satellite.

He left the service to embark on a second career and elected to join Industry, namely Airbus in 2007. Having spent 4 years at Airbus, where he spent his last 2 years as the Head of Sales Operations, he was asked to head up a team in Saudi Arabia, working alongside UK MoD to determine and recommend a new technical capability for the Saudi National Guard.

In 2015 and after 4 years in the Middle East, Steve was invited to join Global Radiodata Communications to lead the business, firstly as Operations Director and now as the MD.
