About
1 AIA LU (HSW)

A Landscape Architect and a Civil Engineer will lead a discussion on green infrastructure and landscapes in a world experiencing climate change. We will focus on the design adaptations needed to create highperforming resilient systems. Increased rainfall amounts are creating larger inundation areas, and higher rainfall intensities and microbursts are leading to more flash flooding. Anticipated changes in
temperature affect flora and fauna. Maintenance and durability will remain a challenge.

This session examines design considerations for green infrastructure and landscapes in our changing climate, including developing resilient plant communities that are responsive to varying rainfall conditions. We will look at strategies for adapting familiar green stormwater infrastructure practices to shifting rainfall patterns and amounts. In a time of increasing concern for dramatic changes to weather and coastlines, this session will focus on what we can do in our region and local communities.

Agenda
  • Understand anticipated changes in rainfall precipitation patterns, temperature conditions, and atmospheric CO2 levels in the Delaware Valley, including the impacts of these changes on flooding, existing infrastructure, and plant communities.
  • Explore tools for designing green infrastructure and a landscape that can mitigate flooding and adapt and evolve with a changing climate.
  • Understand ways to communicate this information to fellow designers, clients and property owners.
  • Consider how observations from low maintenance alternative landscapes, such as meadows and green roofs, can more fully inform all planting designs for improved resilience and better outcomes.
