Keeping People Safe When Walking is a long term Austroads research project focused on reducing pedestrian deaths and serious injuries across Australia and New Zealand. The project supports transport agencies and practitioners to plan, design and operate road and street networks that place pedestrian safety at the centre of decision making.

Pedestrian Trauma fell significantly in the period 1990 to 2015 for both Australia and New Zealand. Progress on reducing pedestrian deaths plateaued over the next 10 years in Australia and New Zealand. There is an emerging trend since 2024 of increasing pedestrian deaths in Australia, and a decreasing trend in New Zealand.

The Austroads Pedestrian Safety Blueprint bridges the gap between the knowledge base on pedestrian safety and its application by practitioners across Australia and New Zealand, so we can progress pedestrian safety in line with our long-term road safety goals.

The webinar will cover guiding principles, goals and priorities, and a structured approach to pedestrian safety planning. It will share examples of contemporary pedestrian safety practice across the elements of a Safe System, advice on prioritisation, success factors, and monitoring and evaluation to ensure continuous improvement.
