The Emerging Picture of Anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Foundation for Managed Care

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Faculty will discuss clinically relevant pathophysiologic processes in CKD-anemia development, burdens faced by patients and health care systems, current and emerging therapeutic options, and potential changes to managed care paradigms as new medications are approved.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for community pharmacists and managed care professionals involved in the care of patients with anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD-anemia).

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be better able to:
• Discuss the prevalence and burdens of anemia associated with CKD, including the costs of underdiagnosis, undertreatment, and safety issues with current therapies
• Explain the pathophysiologic processes underlying anemia associated with CKD, including potential therapeutic targets
• Describe the mechanisms of action, clinical trial data, and potential cost offsets associated with emerging treatment options for CKD-anemia
• Incorporate newly published data and treatment modalities into benefit design strategies to optimize health care access and outcomes for patients with CKD-anemia
