Suicide among young people continues to be a serious problem. Nationally, suicide is the second leading cause of death among children, adolescents, and young adults age 15 to 24. Each day an average of 3,703 young people in grades 9-12 attempt to end their lives.

Suicide survivor, best-selling author, filmmaker, and mental health advocate
Kevin Hines is an award-winning global speaker, best-selling author, documentary filmmaker, and suicide prevention and mental health advocate who has reached millions with his story of an unlikely survival and his strong will to live. Two years after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Kevin now travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery while teaching people of all ages the art of wellness and the ability to survive pain with true resilience.

Chief Executive Officer
David W. Downing, LASW, CDPT joined YES as its Chief Operating Officer in 2006, and has been the Chief Executive Officer since May of 2020. David is both a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Child Mental Health Specialist, with over 25 years of leadership in the non-profit sector. David holds a Certificate in Fundraising Management from the University of Washington, and a Master’s degree in Psychology from Seattle Pacific University. David serves on several boards including the Alliance of Eastside Agencies, and the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) Washington State. In addition, he has been nationally recognized by the Child Welfare League of America for his work and advocacy for youth in the child welfare system.
