Orbis Campfire Sessions: The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and its Impact on Forestry and Land Management

About This Webinar

Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) has made futuristic concepts that were perhaps once just sci-fi daydreams, now a part of everyday life. The technology, which is accelerating rapidly, plays a role in powering transportation, communication, business and agriculture. In this Campfire Session, we’ll touch on how A.I. is beginning to impact the forestry and land management communities, how it’s being utilized and our panel’s hot takes on what’s to come.

Assistant Professor, Precision Forestry- Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, University of Georgia
Dr. Alicia Peduzzi received her Ph.D. in Forestry from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2011. Her research focus is on applying remote sensing science to vegetation assessment and management of natural resources, with particular emphasis on developing methodologies for precision forestry. She started as an assistant professor in precision forestry at UGA’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources in August 2020. Before UGA, she worked for the USDA Forest Service, the Woodwell Climate Research Center, and the World Bank. Over the years, Dr. Peduzzi has worked with pine plantations in the Southeast U.S. as well as with temperate and tropical natural forests, and her remote sensing expertise includes the utilization of LiDAR, radar, and optical data derived from satellites, airborne, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Her research has concentrated on generating predictive models of vegetation biophysical parameters to evaluate and monitor tree growth and productivity and, more importantly, to inform decision-making processes.
