The push for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 is the defining challenge of the times and - whilst all sectors have a role to play - manufacturing will be at the heart of delivering this transition: through both the production and development of new and emerging technology and through the deployment of low carbon solutions and processes within its own operations
In this online panel session held in partnership with the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (the first in a series of three) The Engineer will bring together a panel of experts from across the UK manufacturing landscape to highlight and champion the role that manufacturers are playing in the push for net zero; examine some of the opportunities created; explore some of the challenges that manufacturers face as they decarbonise their own operations; and – through best practice examples – consider some of the solutions to these challenges.

Rachael leads on all things sustainability, including strategy, policy and engagement, for Rolls-Royce plc, and has been described as the driving force behind the company’s action on climate change and decarbonisation. A chartered environmentalist, Rachael is a fellow of IEMA, and sits on the advisory board for We Mean Business.

Dr Gareth Williams

Gareth is an Aeronautical Engineer who developed world-leading research into Self-Healing Carbon Fibre Composites during his PhD at the University of Bristol. He has worked his entire career in applied Research and Development in composite materials around the world and has worked in professional services and consultancy roles for the likes of KPMG. Now Gareth has returned to his roots in Bristol and is the Director for Energy at the National Composites Centre where he is at the forefront of introducing transformational change into the industry by utilising the benefits of lightweight, zero corrosion composite materials. Gareth is currently seconded to HVMC as Director Strategic Development supporting work on hydrogen.

Katy Milne
Dr Katy Milne is a Chief Engineer at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
Katy is the project lead for DRAMA - a part of the Aerospace Technology Institute programme, which will develop digitally twinned additive manufacturing test bed facilities and is a member of the Jet Zero Council. Katy established the Metrology & Non-destructive Testing group at MTC, delivering industrial projects for aerospace, defence, power generation and infrastructure sectors. The group also developed strategic research strands on computer aided quality and on inspection methods for advanced manufacturing routes, including additive manufacturing. Katy gained her doctorate from Imperial College London whilst based full-time at Rolls-Royce Civil Aerospace.
