Alexander M. McKinney IV, MD, serves as Shapiro Chair and Professor of Clinical Radiology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and as Chair of Radiology at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Since joining in 2020, he has led remarkable growth, nearly doubling the faculty, tripling promotions, and building a culture that combines clinical excellence with research, innovation, and faculty wellness.
Before coming to Miami, Dr. McKinney spent 26 years at the University of Minnesota, where he trained in medical school, residency, and neuroradiology fellowship (including additional training at SickKids in Toronto). He went on to serve as Division Director of Neuroradiology, Vice Chair of Research and Informatics, and co-Chair of the Medical School’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts.
Dr. McKinney is internationally recognized for advancing neuroimaging in stroke, encephalopathy, vascular injury, and pediatric brain disorders. He has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers, three books, and multiple national guidelines, while also holding patents in imaging informatics.
At Miami, his vision is framed by the “CARES” model—Clinical, Administrative, Research/Innovation, Educational, and Service excellence—focusing on radiology’s impact on patient care, research, and health equity throughout South Florida and beyond.
