Professor Patricia Casey

Professor Patricia Casey is a graduate of UCC Medical School and completed her Post Graduate psychiatric training in Nottingham and Edinburgh. She has been a Professor of Psychiatry at UCD since 1992 until taking early retirement in 2016. She is the author of over 120 peer review papers and the author of 13 books, including one published in July 2019 - Adjustment Disorder: From Controversy to Clinical Practice, which was shortlisted for the BMA Book of the Year 2019, and was highly commended. In addition, she is the author of Psychiatry and the Law, along with eleven other books.
She currently works in the Mater Hospital as a Consultant and is the Clinical Lead for the Self Harm Service. She also provides psychiatric services to medical students of the Royal College of Surgeons. She has a large medico-legal practice, both criminal and civil, and acts for both plaintiffs and defendants.
Patricia has chaired the Fitness to Practice Committee of the Medical Council from 1995 to 1999, and writes a weekly column in the Irish Independent. She is editor of BJ Psych. Advances, published by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London. She is on the Board of Governors of the Anscombe Bioethics Centre, Oxford, UK.
