Phil Ní SHEAGHDHA RGN, MA (IRHR), Dip IR/TU, Dip Employment Law., is a trained intensive care nurse and General Secretary of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO). She has worked as a nurse in Ireland, Australia, the UK and USA, following training in Dublin and London.

She began work for the INMO in 1998, later completing an MA in industrial relations and a Higher Diploma in employment law. She was Director of Industrial Relations from 2008 until 2018, when she was appointed General Secretary. As General Secretary, she has overall responsibility for the organisation, leading on INMO’s advocacy on national nursing policy and through various public sector pay agreements.

In 2019, she led the organisation’s first strike in two decades – winning pay increases and staffing improvements for nurses and midwives. She is an elected member of the Executive Council of Ireland’s Trade Union Federation, ICTU, Co-chair of Ireland’s Emergency Department Taskforce and Executive Council member of the European Federation of Nurses. She is the representative of INMO and ICTU on National Safeguarding Committee and National Steering on safe staffing and skill mix Taskforce.

The Sean Mac Diarmada Summer School is now becoming a firmly established event in the annual calendar of summer schools being held nationwide, and continues to offer to its audience, the very best of contribution in the context of academic expertise and public interest issues.

Thanks to the hard work, dedication and commitment of the summer school committee, the local community, and Leitrim County Council, Kiltyclogher has established a summer school that bridges the gap between the historical and the contemporary, linking the past to the most pertinent of current issues and topics, thus making it an event that embraces many interests, and appeals to a wide spectrum of people.
