Paul Lovoi PhD
Founder and CTO MindRhythm, Inc.
Paul Lovoi has 43 years of experience inventing solutions to significant problems in technology and medicine and a demonstrated track record of translating those solutions into the clinic. Paul developed the Xoft micro-miniature x-ray tubes. The 1 mm and 2.25 mm diameter x-ray tubes form the foundation of electronic brachytherapy with dose rates exceeding 192Ir brachytherapy seeds. This technology is commercialized as the AXXENT system treating patients worldwide.

At Jan Medical he invented a new imaging modality utilizing passive sonar signal processing to detect cerebral anomalies; concussion, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, and aneurysms non-invasively in less than a minute. This being commercialized as the Nautilus Brainpulse and has received FDA de novo market clearance. Jan Medical was sold to Brainlab AG, Munich Germany.

Paul worked at UCSF over the last two years and developed an inexpensive, disposable, rapid detector of Large Vessel occlusion (LVO) stroke in the prehospital setting. With his extensive experience in the use of fiber optics for non-traditional uses such as power coax cables and 2 Fr fatigue resistant pacing leads, Paul has founded and funded eight companies in diverse fields of flat panel displays, laser paint stripping, oncology, cardiology, stroke triage and Real Time Location System integrated RFID tags for blood tube tracking. These companies have raised over $900 M of capital.

Derek Herrera
Founder and CTO of Spinal Singularity
Derek Herrera is the Founder and CTO of Spinal Singularity, a seed-stage venture-backed medical device company that designs devices for people with Spinal Injury. Derek founded Spinal Singularity in 2015 after graduating from the UCLA Anderson EMBA program.

Prior to this, Derek served for eight years as a Marine Infantry and Special Operations Officer. As an Infantry Officer Derek deployed twice with 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. On his first deployment Derek served as a Rifle Platoon Commander in Ramadi, Iraq. On his second deployment Derek served as a Company Executive Officer while aboard the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit. On this deployment Derek conducted non-combat operations in multiple countries in the Middle East and disaster relief in Haiti.

Derek transferred to the Marine Special Operations Command and completed training in 2011. He was then assigned to 1st Marine Raider Battalion where he served as a Special Operations Team Commander. He deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2012 where he conducted Village Stability Operations. On this deployment Derek was shot and paralyzed from the chest down in an enemy firefight.

Derek currently serves as a Board Member for the American Technion Society – Western Region, a non-profit that supports the Technion, Israel’s Institute of Technology. He serves as Chairman and President of the Board for MVPVets, a non-profit that assists military Veterans in finding meaningful careers in the MedTech and Life Science Industry. Derek is also the President of the Board of Directors for the Marine Raider Foundation, a non-profit that supports needs of the Marine Raider community.

Derek lives in San Clemente, CA with his wife, Maura, his twin boys, Hudson and Hunter, and his dog Shaggy.
