LGBT+ People, on average, use public transit at a rate higher than their cis/straight counterparts. Despite that, queer people, particularly trans people, face significant barriers to accessing safe public transportation options across the United States. LGBT+ people can experience violence and harassment in all phases of travel, however the erosion of queer communities and a contemporary rise in backlash towards the trans community have made issues of access to resources and safety even more pressing, all while traditional discourse and studies have excluded this population from their greater analysis on travel. Join Morgan as they seek to spotlight the issues faced by LGBT+ people using public transportation and continue the greater discussion on reimagining public safety for queer people.

Naming Harm Strategies and Solutions Breakout Facilitator
Morgan Hunlen (She/They pronouns) is a planner with the Thrivance Group. Born and raised in Atlanta Georgia, Morgan originally started their career in aviation – obtaining a Professional Pilot degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 2016 – and worked in various settings before returning to school for Urban and Regional Planning at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in 2018. Astonished by the disproportionate effects of a lack of transportation options in/on marginalized communities and the harmful aftermath of discriminatory planning in cities, Morgan dedicated themselves to pursuing futures where they could support greater mobility determination for communities in need.

Morgan is an outspoken advocate for LGBT+ rights, and has spoken at several grassroots transportation conferences about the need to support the mobility freedom of those in the LGBT+ community. Her efforts at MTSU led to the re-classification of several bathrooms to gender-neutral restrooms. And on the ground, Morgan has participated in organizing outreach and activism efforts in Nashville, Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri. In her free time, Morgan enjoys anime culture, cycling, and sightseeing. Love has brought her to Los Angeles, California, where she continues to pursue her goals and remain involved in community initiatives.
