APPLI: High School Readiness
High School Readiness Workshop for Rising 9th Graders
August 26-27, 2020
1 pm – 4:30 pm

The Alice Paul Institute invites rising 9th graders to attend our new summer program, the Alice Paul Professional Leadership Institute (APPLI): High School Readiness. The program spans two afternoons in late August, and will help prepare girls for the new challenges and opportunities they will encounter as they enter high school. Girls will talk with API staff, local teachers, guidance counselors, and peer mentors in a series of workshops designed to build the confidence and concrete skills that lead to long term personal and academic success.

Wednesday, August 26

1:00-2:00: What is Leadership?

Learn about leadership skills that help women of all ages succeed personally and professionally. Using inspiring women like Alice Paul as its starting point, this workshop will teach girls about the traits that helped them succeed, as well as how to identify and cultivate those qualities in themselves.

2:15-3:15: Healthy and Effective Ways to Communicate

We all know how to talk to other people…but do we know how to communicate well? Learn how to listen well and make yourself heard! This workshop will explore some of the most common styles of communication, and why some of them are more effective than others.

3:30-4:30: Social Media and Social Life

How do you present yourself to the world, both in person and online? Are you safe and comfortable in your real and virtual skin? Learn about strategies for managing your social media presence as well as how that is different from face-to-face interactions. This workshop will also discuss the ways social dynamics can change in high school, and how to stay happy and healthy while growing and making new friends.

Thursday, August 27

1:00-2:00: Maintaining Balance with a Busy Schedule

High school brings a lot of new opportunities, and with them, lots of responsibility. Between schoolwork, extra-curriculars, socializing, and family life, it can seem very overwhelming to keep everything in balance. This workshop will offer techniques for managing obligations while also setting aside enough free time to relax and enjoy life.

2:15-3:15: Mental Health

In addition to the increase in academic demands, high school often comes with added social pressures. These can take a toll on mental health. Talk with counselors about issues like anxiety, body image, peer pressure, and relationships, and learn strategies for holding healthy boundaries with yourself and others.

3:30-4:30: Peer Mentoring

Adults have thoughts and insights to offer on high school, but sometimes the best advice comes from people who are currently living it. Talk with 11th and 12th graders who are members of Alice Paul Institute’s Girls Leadership Council about their experiences of high school. Ask questions, hear stories, and get to know the friendly faces of some older students!
